Leanne Walton - Musical Director (Senior & Junior Wind Bands)

Leanne Walton first discovered the joy of making music at 5years old, playing tunes on a xylophone with coloured notes and coloured music.  Soon this turned into piano lessons and then at 11 years old Leanne began learning the clarinet as part of the school band program.

As a school student Leanne toured Australia, New Zealand and Fiji, performing as a soloist with Avondale Schools Concert Band.  She also performed regularly at many church and community events, and at 16 won a scholarship to study at Gosford Conservatorium of Music with Robert Knox.

On leaving school Leanne studied clarinet with Mark Walton and Ian Cook, completing a Bachelor of Music at Newcastle Conservatorium.  During this time she played Solo and Eb Clarinet in Newcastle Wind Orchestra, won the National Championship in Senior Clarinet, and as a member of Quartz Clarinet quartet was finalist in the ABC TV show Quest

Leanne began teaching at 15 and loves to see the excitement as young students discover music. She has taught clarinet and saxophone students from ages 6 to adult with many of them successfully completing music exams from 1st grade to AMusA.  A number of her students have gone on to pursue music professionally.  Leanne has done postgraduate studies in Kodaly Music Education and is currently teaching clarinet and saxophone and directing bands in several schools in the Illawarra.

Making music with others has always been a passion for Leanne and this currently includes playing clarinet and saxophone in local theatre productions, playing in jazz bands, playing with the Amateur Chamber Music Society as well as being involved in her church band.  As conductor of the Junior Wind Band it is a privilege for her to pass this enthusiasm for ensemble music on to young players.
